Bill & Sandy Broskett
of Misty Mountain Samoyeds have been enjoying Samoyed dogs for over 30
years. Since 1995, they have become involved in showing and
breeding the dogs. They are members in good standing of the Samoyed
Club of America, Samoyed Association of Canada, the regional Minuteman
Samoyed Club and these local all breed organizations: Tioga County Kennel
Club, and Friends of the Susque-Nango Kennel Club.
Samoyeds originated in northwestern
Siberia, and are named for the Samoyede tribesman, who were the original
breeders. They have also been called Smiling Dogs & Christmas
Dogs. The dogs were part of the family, even used to help keep
the children warm. They are versatile dogs, having been used as
reindeer herders, sledge dogs, to ferry heavy weights, and even hunt polar
bear. In today's more recreational society, they are used for
skijoring, obedience, agility, as well as sled teams and companions.
They are classified by the American Kennel Club as working dogs. In
Canada, the classification is Group 3. The standard for the ideal
Samoyed is (male) 21" to 23-1/2" at the tip of the shoulder
blade and (female) 19" to 21". A male in this height range
weighs from 45 to 65 pounds and a female from 35 to 50 pounds. Coat
colors are white, cream, or biscuit with two layers- a dense, wooly
undercoat which is typically shed out once a year and a silver-tipped harsh
outer coat of long, straight guard hairs.
